Report: Dorking CC/Redhill CC Denbies Duels Hill Climb

$

2012_TrainsharpBanner600

Dorking CC and Redhill CC held the first Denbies Duels event on the weekend through the scenic and traffic free Denbies Wine Estate in Dorking Surrey.

RST Cycle Clothing & Trigon Bikes

EVENT REPORT:

The course was cleared of leaves and general debris ahead of the event by Dorking company Johnstons Sweepers and some dedicated club members with shovels. The road meanders through the vineyard and is approximately 1.25 miles long rising to the same elevation as Boxhill on the opposite side of the Mole Valley.

Weather conditions were perfect, with clear blue skies and sunny conditions, but with a consistent south west breeze, occasionally gusting – particularly unwelcome on the long straight approaching the finish, where the competitors had to ride into it.

The event was sold out and all sixty competitors paired up to do the first round that was timed as a traditional hill climb. The fastest sixteen from this first timed round went through to the head to head duels heats. Two Dorking CC riders, Dylan Bexley and Any Ross and one Redhill CC rider, Matt Peel from the promoting clubs made it through to the final sixteen for the head to head duels, although each were beaten by their opponents Connell Yates, Jonathan Harris and Jon Hughes in round two and didn’t make it through to the quarter finals.

The two finalists gathered pace after a tactical track racing style start of the last round and wound themselves into their fifth and final ascent of Ranmore for the day. This was a real head to head duel fought to the finish, when an unfortunate touching of wheels resulted in a spectacular crash just metres from the finish line. Matthew Pilkington (Elite racer nationally ranked at 61st) pipped local cycling legend Connell Yates (Elite racer nationally ranked 105th) to the line and won the inaugural Denbies Duels event 2013, having seen off competition from 59 other riders.
Overall Results (First Round Times)
1st Matthew Pilkington – (4.57) (Metaltek-Knights of Old)
2nd Connell Yates – (5.01) (In Gear Quickvit Trainsharp RT)
3rd Jonathan Harris – (5.06) (GS Avanti)

1st Vet Male – Marcus Brueton – (5.16) (Norwood Paragon)
1st Female – Deborah Perceval – (6.39) (34 Nomads)
1st Junior – Freddie Phillips – (6:23) (Dorking CC)

Prize money kindly donated by an anonymous donor who wanted to highlight and promote the good work done by Epsom Canine Rescue.

Before your readers flock to Denbies to ride this iconic course, they need to bear in mind that it’s on private land and we were granted special permission for this weekend only to use the road for the Denbies Duels cycling event.

The rest of the year it is classified as a public footpath and the gates are closed across it barring access. If they want to ride the course, they’ll have to watch out for next year’s entry forms!

Q & A: Lynn Hamel (multi Hill Climb Champ)

2013_VanillaBikes_Banner_Oct_03

A question & answer chat with a multiple (2012, 2011, 2010, 2008) Women’s Hill Climb Champion, Lynn Hamel from the Lake District

RST Cycle Clothing & Trigon Bikes

Lynn has been racing bikes since she was 17 (12 years) as well as having dabbled with triathlon and running too. Lynn raced her first national event in 2004 which was the hill climb where she finished 3rd lady and went on to win the title in 2012, 2011, 2010 and 2008.

2013_Monsal_Hamel

Lynn, who lives in Kendal in the Lake District was second in the British Championships in 2013 where she says she did her best but was unable to add to her list of victories.

Here is a question and answer with Lynn …

What was it about cycling that appealed as a sport?
Lynn: I did some bike touring in my teens with a friend in the village and enjoyed being able to get from A to B under my own steam and found it helped with anxiety.

What challenges does racing bikes, a hard sport to be sure, have for women and you in particular?
Lynn: One of the things that can be a challenge for women in racing is varying energy levels at different times of the month. I certainly find this a problem.

Is Hill Climbing your speciality or do you enjoy racing of other types of events which you do through out the year
Lynn: Hill climbing is my speciality although I also enjoy 50 and 100 mile time trials

You have won many titles in Hill Climb, is there a favourite among them?
Lynn: The Rake in 2012 was my favourite national hill climb title. It’s a class event!

2013_Champion_Hamel_rake

What type of hill climb course do you favour
Lynn: My favourite type of hill climb course is one that goes up hill all the way and about 3-8 minutes long.

Your bike; what make/model is it?
Lynn: I race on a Giant TCR composite with Zipp wheels. I use a Rolf Vector front wheel with a shallower rim if the hill is very exposed.

Do you make any changes to it for the hill climbs outside of perhaps using normal bars instead of tri ones
Lynn: I have my Giant TCR road bike set up for hill climbing, so unless it’s pretty pan flat like in 2011 where I used my Cervelo P3 time trial bike, I’ll use the Giant.

What sort of gearing front and back you have on your bike? Does that change a lot for different hill climbs
Lynn: I use a standard chain ring 39 x 52 and my cassette is 27 x 12. This is what I always use unless I use my time trial bike which is a 55 x 42 chain ring and 23 x 12 cassette. My time trial bike takes 650 wheels, hence why the gears appear big.

2011_LynnHamel_03

2011.

What has been the highlight of your year racing.
Lynn: Breaking my record on the Salt Ayre circuit for a 10 mile time trial has to be my highlight of the season.

Do you work and if so is that full time?
Lynn: I’m writing and illustrating children’s books and working voluntarily at Socialworx which is creating story boards for an online site promoting awareness on different issues around mental health and well being.

Is it difficult to fit in training around your other commitments
Lynn: It’s great fitting in training around work, as I work afternoons mostly.

Do you feel there are more women in time trialling/hill climbs this year
Lynn: I don’t think there are more women in time trialling and hill climbing this year than any other year, but there are many more women coming into road racing, particularly junior girls.

Do you coach yourself or have a coach to help structure your training?
Lynn: I have a coach, but although they are incredibly supportive, I’m not able to follow the training properly because of frequent tired patches, possibly due to my adrenal fatigue, which I was diagnosed with in 2010. One short session of intervals can knock me for a week and that’s if I manage them to start with!

What is the best thing about racing bikes?
Lynne: The best thing about bike racing has to be winning.

If you could change one of your weaknesses into a strength, which one would it be?
Lynne: If I could change a weakness into a strength it would be my recovery, it’s shocking, especially given that I’m 28.

What will you doing training wise during the winter – as little as possible or a structured programme based on getting success in 2014?
Lynne: During the winter I plan to sack off the ‘training’ and just ride on my heavy winter hack bike, no numbers and data rubbish and no energy and recovery drinks full of sugar. No mince pies or christmas pudding. A range of healthy foods only. I’m going to support my adrenal glands because they’re the power house for my energy!

Our thanks to Lynn, a great champion in Women’s cycling. Good luck for 2014!

First of its type in the UK, a Hill Climb Series in the West of the country starts on September 13 with a 3 stage event

News – Hill Climb Series

NOTE: Send your results as well as club, team & event news here

From the organiser … This series has been developed to showcase the talent and popularity of riders and hills in the West Region. It’s the first series of this type in the UK and 2014 will be its inaugural running. Hopefully it will expand and become even more popular with years to come and showcase the area to the rest of the UK that this region is the epicentre of hill climbing.

2012_HC_Champs_Tejvan_Pettinger01

Each competitor will be set off at minute intervals and be timed against the clock to see how fast they can do the Hill Climb, the fastest time wins.
We have a Trophy for the series winner who will be Crowned

- King of the Hills
- First Vet (40 and over)
- First teams of 3 (all of whom must have completed 7 hill climbs)
- First lady (Queen of the Hills)
- First under 18 male
- First under 18 female

At last years events, the riders who won will hopefully be back again, Tejvan Pettinger(National Champion pictured above), Richard Cartland, Rob Gough, James Coleman, Ben Davis.

We also had twice National Champion James Dobbin competing as well as other prolific riders. As you can see the list of top class male athletes is very striking but I would like to try and promote the event to all.

We have nine organising clubs with 11 hill climbs in total. We had over 500 entries last year to the events but hope to top 700 this year.

The series home page can be seen here –  click

A Facebook page has also been created – click here

Some of the hill climbs last year had a full field of 120 riders but others a lot fewer. I am hoping this series will bolster the smaller events fields and make it a great competition for all. The aim of the series is to get more people involved i.e. male, female, young and old giving their all in a race as short as 700 metres and as long as 4 miles in a true test against gravity.

Series Events
13/09/14 13:00 Cotswold Veldrijden (3 stage hill climb)
21/09/14 10:00 Minehead Cycling Club

Sunday 21st September sees the weight weenies begin the short British oddity that is the Hill Climb season in the North East

News – GS Metro 2 Stage Hill Climb

NOTE: Send your results as well as club, team & event news here

A two stage hill climb in Northumberland has attracted a record field of 54 riders willing to test themselves on two short, sharp climbs. Stage one will be the established Hedley on the Hill Climb up to the picturesque village pub The Feathers Inn, a key supporter of the event. Stage 2 will see the riders tackle the new climb of Eastgate Bank from Stocksfield to High Mickley. The field is high on quality.

The ladies race sees Bronze medal winner from the National’s 2013 Angela Hibbs (Tyneside Vagabonds CC) a firm favourite. The men’s event is packed with quality in seniors/juniors and vets.

Names to watch out for include defending champion and Course Record holder Luke Mullen( Hetton Hawks CC) who will have an hour to gather his thoughts starting as scratchman. The host clubs hopes may well rest on the scrawny shoulders of Carl Donaldson a winner some 20 times this season already. Also keen to make an impression will be Mick Jones of Derwentside CC who won the prestigous Hartside HC in 2013 and was unable to defend his title last weekend when his lift let him down.

A generous prize list supported by Red Marine and Prudhoe based Cycle Art will see the riders well rewarded for exceptional performance.

Proceedings get underway at 11:01 at Hedley on the Hill, 13:02 at Eastgate Bank.

Course MH11 (STAGE ONE) First Rider 11:01
Start near the foot of the hill on the minor road leading to Hedley on the Hill. Opposite the electric pylon approx. 100 metres from the T-Junction of the minor New Ridley to Painshawfield road. Proceed up the hill for 1.1 miles to finish at the crest of the hill approx. 85 metres before the Hedley on the hill boundary signs.

Course MH14 (STAGE TWO) First Rider 13:02
Eastgate Bank – Stocksfield. 0.8 miles. Start on Minor Road Eastgate Bank alongside telegraph pole no 59. Proceed south up the bank to finish telegraph pole no 10.

Event HQ
The Feathers Inn at Hedley on the Hill have kindly agreed use of the PUB. The restaurant/bar should also be open to purchase refreshments. A kitty has been placed behind the bar to allow all riders a coffee after the event.

NOTE: Send your results as well as club, team & event news here

Chris Storer, South Pennine Road Club and formerly Ashfield RC, was twice East Midlands Regional Road Race Champion and a prolific winner of Time Trials and Hill Climbs.

In 2013 he organised his first event, the Crich Hill climb and then six months later he was killed in a road accident while taking part in a time trial. The South Pennine have renamed the Hill Climb event as the Chris Storer Memorial Hill Climb and would like to encourage entries from riders of all abilities including young riders who will use a part of the course on a private road.

Course starts at the Cliff Inn with a climb of 1.10 to the island at the foot of the Crich War Memorial. Entry is £10 of which £2 goes to the War Memorial Fund.

The world’s oldest motor sport venue for 109 years, Shelsley Walsh is to have a first on Sunday October 5th with a Hill Climb

News – Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb

NOTE: Send your results as well as club, team & event news here

After motor racing on the world’s oldest motor sport venue for 109 years, Shelsley Walsh is to have a first on Sunday October 5th 2014 with a competitive Cycling Hill Climb Time Trial.

Co-operating with the Worcester St John’s and Wyre Forest (Kidderminster) Cycling Clubs the event will cover exactly the same course at Shelsley Walsh that was used for the pioneers of motor sport on 12th August 1905 and still a diamond in International motor sport with today’s stunning F1 derived race car technology.

WSJCC Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb4

The course is a 1000 yard tarmac hill in the Teme Valley 10 miles west of Worcester that winds it’s way off the start line, past Triangle, through Kennel and Crossing before the steepest part through the Esses and then the straight to the finish line.

It is steep and relentless necessitating competitors to pace themselves while keeping the cadence up and enough for that last burst as the chequered flag comes into sight.

Entries are open now at just £10 through  with categories for Men, Ladies, Veterans, Juniors, Disabled with trophies to be awarded.

Held under the rules of the UK’s cycling governing body, the CTT, the Shelsley Walsh Cycling Hill Climb has a huge advantage of being held on a private road and so will be free of traffic ensuring the utmost safety for the competitors.

For those on their Sunday cycle runs, spectators are free to come and watch with free entry on the gate.

Shelsley Walsh has a covered paddock area where the racing cars are normally garaged during motor racing events and so will double up as an area for cyclists to warm-up under cover. A full service restaurant will also be open for all racers and spectators experiencing more Shelsley Walsh history. Showers are also on site.

In tests earlier this summer the best time at Shelsley Walsh was logged by Richard Grimes (Freds Cycles) with a time of 3min 26secs.

Worcester St John’s Cycling Club’s Rick Allen reckons that time won’t last in October. “With the success of Brits in cycling since Bejing 2008, the Tour de France 2012 and 2013 and London 2012 the popularity of cycling in this part of the UK has grown massively so it’s great to be involved with Wyre Forest CC to put on this event. Sub three and a half minutes is impressive, but we think that three minutes may well get beaten. Whoever wins in October will have the honour of going into the record books at the world famous venue that is Shelsley Walsh. For cycling fans not wanting to race, then it is the perfect venue to come and visit during an English autumn.”

Mark Constanduros from Shelsley Walsh said, “It is the first non-motorsport event we will have ever held on the track so after 109 years it needed to be done, but it’s great to join forces with Worcester and Wyre Forest so they can use our historic venue. Whoever wins will be joining the famous names of Shelsley such as Sir Stirling Moss (Grand Prix legend), Derek Bell (5x Le Mans 24 hours winner), Sir Malcolm Campbell (Land Speed record holder), Hans Stück (Pre-war Grand Prix driver), Raymond Mays (founder of ERA and BRM racing cars) and Andy Priaulx (3x World Touring Car Champion).”

NOTE: Send your results as well as club, team & event news here

On Sunday 28th September, Newbury Road Club are promoting an open hill climb on the well known Walbury Hill in West Berkshire, which at 297 metres above sea level is also the highest natural point in the South East of England.

The hill climb has traditionally been a club event but this year Newbury RC decided to aim higher and open the event to all. So far it has attracted over 40 riders including current National Hill Climb Champion, Tejvan Pettinger and last year’s fastest veteran in the National event, Pete Tadros as well as other strong local riders and a strong contingent from the club.

The event starts at 10 am on Sunday 28th. According to organiser, Chris Boulton, the prize list is growing but is already at £450 plus cycling equipment with prizes across all categories from senior, veterans, ladies, junior and juveniles.

The course on Walbury Hill is just over a mile long with maximum gradient of 10%. The current record is 4 minutes 13 seconds and is expected to be broken.

The C.C.Sudbury Open Hill Climb is taking place 3 weeks earlier this year on the 19th October 2014 on Watson’s Hill, Semer (BHC/1 course) – first rider off at 11:01. It incorporates the East District Hill Climb Championships – with trophies available for fastest rider & the fastest team of three riders.

C.C. Sudbury Open Hill Climb 2013 by Roger Rush

The prize money has been greatly increased for this year’s event. Men and women have equal prize money and can win the following amounts: £50 (1st ) £40 (2nd), £30 (3rd), £20 (4th) £10 (5th), whilst the fastest male and female juvenile/ junior will be awarded £20.

New prizes have also been introduced for this year’s event. There are Team prizes of £15(1st) £10 ( 2nd) £5 (3rd ) – prizes per rider in a team of three. Plus, new course record prizes courtesy of sponsors, Robins Row Insurance, who are offering £75 to the riders who set the new men’s or women’s course records. These currently stand at 43.4secs by Tom Stephenson (Colchester Rovers C.C.) and 1.00.6 (XRT Elmy Cycles) by Sandra Mackay, respectively.

On top of these prizes the organizers provide closed & swept roads to compete on. Following the unprecedented success of last year’s event, they have also made available ample additional car parking in the meadow at the foot of Watson’s Hill- just yards from the start. Finally, mention should be made of the atmosphere of this event. Typically, crowds of people gather on the hill to cheer on the riders. This event offers a great opportunity for friends, family and club mates to watch and lend their support.

This video of last year’s event gives a taste of what you can expect: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3rEEYliW0I

Entries close at 18:00 on 7th October and can be made online via the CTT website or by post. (See C.C.Sudbury website for further details http://www.cycleclubsudbury.com/.)

Michael Jones of Derwentside CC winner of the two stage GS Metro Hill Climb for the first North East hill climbs of the season

(Thanks Ben)

A bright clear day greeted the record field for the first North East hill climbs of the season. Upgraded to a 2 stage event the host club GS Metro included the shorter steep climb of East Gate Bank as a second stage. Good numbers of spectators made for a cracking atmosphere with many riders commenting on how the crowd helped them dig deep on the tougher sections of the climbs. Cowbells were rung, airhorns blown and much cheering, applause and flag waving drove the riders on.
The big talking point was whether the CR set in 2013 by Luke Mullen on the first stage of Hedley on the Hill would stand. As the riders picked their way up the climb it transpired that Mullen’s record was safe.
Stage One saw Michael Jones of Derwentside CC victorious with Angela Hibbs TVCC taking the ladies category.

Stage Two was shorter and started off on a steep incline which would be a test. Again large crowds encouraged every man and woman up the climb. Promoting club rider Andy Mallen was a firm favourite of the Mickley residents.
This more explosive climb seemed to suit a younger man as Ian Lee of RAF CA romped up the slopes to win in 3’06 from Mullen and Jones. Hibbs again took the ladies award.

Overall though Jones had done enough and made up for the disappointment of missing out on Hartside the previous week. Hibbs won the ladies, Michael Openshaw (Cestria CC) fastest of the V40s, Dave Goodwin (Newcastle Cheviot CC who had a fantastic mob of supporters on the climb) was quickest of the V50’s and Thomas Horden won both stages and the overall in the U18’s.

Lewis Keightley (Primera-sport.com) won the opening round of the inter-club hill climb competition on Kingston Hill. Keightley flew up the twisting climb above Corfe Castle in the Purbecks, stopping the clock on 1:59:17, not quite the record for the climb but one of only a handful of sub 2 minute rides in the history of the event.

44

Last year’s overall winner, Simon McLaughlin (Bournemouth Jubilee) finished 5 seconds adrift in second place, with in-form Ryan Weston (Poole Wheelers) snatching third place from James Horton. It is early days in the 4 race series but already the team title looks to be a two-horse race between CC Weymouth and the Dorchester-based shop team, Mud, Sweat’n Gears. Forty seven starters “suffered” on the shaded climb before emerging in the late summer sunshine at the chequered board just above the Scott Arms.

The action switches to Portland next Sunday (28th) with the CC Weymouth event. Starting below Fortuneswell the climb finishes high above Chesil Beach on the Jurassic coast, first rider off at 09:00.
