BikeP0RN: The Gun’s Gravity Defying Trigon

British Hill Climb Champion Gunnar Grönlund’s Trigon RQC28A is a bike that weighs under six kilos and has helped its rider to multiple wins and podiums in 2012

RST Cycle Clothing & Trigon Bikes

Today (October 23), VeloUK.net travelled to Ramsbottom in Lancashire to meet up with the British Hill Climb Champion Gunnar Grönlund to see how he was preparing for the 2012 British RTTC Hill Climb Championship on the ‘Rake’.

Gunnar from Sweden, in his first season of Hill Climbs in 2011, won the British title in Derbyshire on a long ‘draggy’ type of climb that took over 12 minutes to complete, a lot different to the short sharp climbs he’s been racing this season where an effort of a minute or two is all that’s needed to complete the distance. For the fastest riders anyway.

Gunnar in 2012 has proudly worn the strikingly designed (by RST) British champions jersey during the short hill climb season and intends to give it everything on Sunday to retain his title against some very strong opposition. We’ll have an interview with Gunnar shortly but let’s look at the bike he’ll be using from his sponsors at Cycle Division.

Pick up the bike and it seemingly weighs nothing! It is just so light compare to a ‘normal bike’ and when matched to a rider weight 58 or so kilos, you have a championship winning ‘package’. The bike is based around the Trigon RQC28A Special Edition frame.  The Cycle Division say on their website they have a very limited number of these available, with custom graphics, and despite those limited numbers, the price is still only £799.99.

Here are the specs for the frame:
- Full Carbon frame with Venus C8 Advanced Composite material.
-Lightest frame in the Trigon Range
-Integrated Carbon dropouts
-1 1/8″- 1.5″ headtube design for increased stiffness and better front end handling
-Semi Concealed brake cable routing under top tube
-Standard threaded BB
-850g frame weight for size 52cm (Gunnar rides a 49cm, 836gms)

The bike for the Hill Climb Championship will be slightly different to the one he used at Monsal and the BEC CC climbs in that he’ll have some Lightweight wheels in which he says are not just light but stiff as well so minimal power is lost through flexing.

Now many riders over the years will have opted for a fixed wheel for a hill climb to get the weight down but these geared bikes like Gunnar’s are so light, that a fixed wheel just isn’t necessary anymore, especially on a course like the Rake where the gradient varies. The ‘Rake’ can be divided into four sections so Gunnar will use a single chain ring at the front like he has all season and rely on the sprockets at the back to get the gear he wants.

A straight through 12 to 21 block may be used on Sunday unless Gunnar feels he needs a 23. The weather will also play a part as it was dry for the recce and slippery roads may need even lower gears despite using treaded tubulars on the Lightweight wheels.

Part of the reason for the recce today was to look at gearing for the race as Gunnar has not ridden this course before and so the 42 FSA chainring he has used in many events this year, may be swapped for a 39. Or, a different block on the back used. On the Rake today he had a 12 to 21 straight through block and the question he’ll be asking is ‘will I need a 23?’

While out with Gunnar, others riding the climb had 25s or 27’s which many will need to get up that final section when already well into oxygen debt.

The Rake is a brutal climb where the steepest section comes at the end and boy is it steep and The handrail along the wall is not there for nothing! The average gradient is said to be 1 in 8.8 for the whole climb but that final section is far steeper, in modern numbers, 23 or 24 percent perhaps, maybe steeper! No, I didn’t have any gadgets on me to measure it!

Note the chunky front end to aid stiffness… It’s a bike that has been tested by bike riders (former pros like Chris Walker) for pros and those who want a  pro bike. The colourful SRAM Red levers. Note the lack of handlebar tape… The computer may also go …

Determining the gearing can require a little guess work because on race day with a number on your back and the crowd shouting in your ear from a foot away, it can all feel very different to the training efforts so Gunnar will has a little thinking to do in the coming days after his half a dozen or so efforts today.

An example of how the gradient changes can be seen in that Gunnar expects to be using between three and four gears only for the climb, doing his best to keep the pedals turning quickly rather than grinding up as some will do.

The Vision Trimax Carbon 170mm cranks with single chain ring (44 or 39) fixed using aluminium bolts and a ceramic bottom bracket. Speed play Zero pedals and SRAM PC1091 chain

Saddle is Trigon VCS03 full carbon model mounted on a Trigon full carbon seat post SP138UL (Superlight: 165g)

Brakes optional for the hill climb except on the descent …

Intregrated Trigon bars/stem (above & below) which Gunnar says weigh a little more but are very stiff. These are now discontinued but newer, more aero ones can be seen here

Interview: Defending Hill Climb Champion Gunnar Grönlund

VeloUK.net talks to British Hill Climb Champion Gunnar Grönlund ahead of this weekends big one, the 2012 British Hill Climb Championship on the Rake.

RST Cycle Clothing & Trigon Bikes

As I write this, the Tour de France 2013 is being launched and one of the key highlights of any Tour is the summit finish; the crowds cheering on the riders and the battle between rider and a mountain.

Monsal and the big crowd cheer on Matrix Prendas rider Jessie Walker.

In some small way, the British Hill Climb is like a mini version. When you look at the crowds at events like the Monsal and BEC hill climbs, you can’t help but be carried along on a wave of noise and enthusiasm and this weekend on the ‘Rake’, that same atmosphere will face the riders in the British championship for the third running of the title event on this brutal climb.

When you’re wearing the champion’s stripes, the desire to hold on to them is a very strong one and RST/Trigon Bikes rider Gunnar Grönlund will be doing everything he can to repeat his win from 2011 on the Rake (Lancashire) on Sunday. The favourite, due to his wins at the Monsal and Bec CC Hill climbs will be Jack Pullar but Gunnar is doing all he can to be in the best possible shape for the race and to deny the North West rider that title and stop his unbeaten record.

Gunnar in the champion’s jersey at Monsal. This weekend he defends that on the ‘Rake’.

Both riders are expected to be well supported by their teams and for Gunnar and his RST Racing Team, the event is a very important one. The season has been a very good one already for RST with their Youth riders winning many British titles and their senior team also making their presence felt in road races.

After only two years, the team with a multiple British pro champion at its helm, Chris Walker, is making great progress and the squad will be looking to progress more in 2013 with some racing in Europe providing additional sponsors can be found to help them move forward.

An important part of the team since the middle of 2011 has been Gunnar Grönlund and on Tuesday he was driven to the ‘Rake’ in Ramsbottom by RST Racing team manager Dave Coulson who has many years experience racing at the highest level in Britain.

Gunnar and Dave Coulson look at the course map before a busy afternoon of riding the climb.

Prior to hours of going up and down the ‘Rake’, VeloUK.net spoke to Gunnar about hill climbs. The British Champion from Sweden only started doing hill climbs last year after a season where he didn’t race as much as he had hoped he would. With a lot of enthusiasm to race still burning inside, Gunnar wanted to do something that would help raise his profile to get a team for 2012 and the hill climb was the best fit for that challenge. That choice worked out well for Gunnar who led the RST Racing Team’s Senior squad on the road in 2012.

With the road season over and a lot of racing under his wheels, Gunnar’s had a different approach to the Hill Climb season this year. Gunnar chose hill climbs back in 2011 because he’s never really got into cyclo-cross and always been quite a natural climber weighing only 58 kilos or so. “I enjoy the hill climbs and many of the events have quite a relaxed atmosphere around them” he explained.
It’s been a short hill climb season for Gunnar to enjoy being British Champion, six weeks or so, but that he says with all the nervous energy that goes into each event wearing those stripes, is long enough. “I wouldn’t want it to be a lot longer” says Gunnar who added that this year he’s tried to race a bit less than last year averaging only one event per week”.

Gunnar riding the steep section of the climb.

“I haven’t won as much as I won last year but I don’t think that is down to form as I think I am stronger than last year. I have done events to set me up for this (the Rake) which haven’t suited me as much but that’s all part of the plan and hopefully it will work out on Sunday. It’s still been a good season for me in the jersey even though I like to win more. I certainly don’t feel I have let myself down or the jersey.”

“I’m not a powerful rider being quite small at 58 to 59 kilos so the longer hill climbs where you can ride more on threshold and are more like a time trial, suit me a lot better. So the challenge last year was good for me but this year it has been very different so I have done everything I can to prepare for that challenge in racing and training.”

“Last year I felt I peaked a bit early and started to feel tired in the weeks leading up to the championship so I have tried to do it a bit different this year. I’ve also tried to pick out the events very differently to how I did last year because as soon as I decided I was going to defend the title, I knew I needed to do it properly. So I aimed to do events like the Monsall Head and Bec CC hill climbs, the really short ones instead of doing the ones I actually enjoy, the longer ones which take ten or twenty minutes”.

Gunnar and Ashley Proctor crest the top of the climb near the finish for the race on Sunday.

Gunnar’s approach to riding a Hill Climb
The 2011 championship in Derbyshire was on a long draggy type climb and so the race was as much a ‘5 mile’ style time trial as a smash it and grab time trial like the one on the Rake. But every effort, whether it’s a minute or 10 ten minutes requires a pacing strategy.

With the time gap between riders a lot smaller at the top of the results sheet on short climbs like the Rake, getting the pace management right will be key. Which is why Gunnar, and other riders, were on the Rake riding the climb over and over.

“Even with a two minute effort, there is a lot of pace management” says Gunnar. “That is the reason we’re here today; to learn how to pace the climb because in these events, you run the risk of blowing too soon and losing a lot of time. Even on these short climbs, you need to get the effort right by riding the climb quite a few times to see where you can gain time, where you will lose time and then work out a pacing plan.”

It will take control too which isn’t easy when you have a number on your back, pressure to win the biggest event of the season and the crowd screaming in your face to go faster from a foot away. Adrenalin, red mist, pressure; it will all need to play second fiddle to control because as riders know, it’s easy to just smash it from the start line and then park up on the worst part of the climb.

So, on Tuesday, Gunnar was doing what he says is one of the most important things he can do pre-race; riding the whole climb, breaking it down and then riding it section by section and becoming at one with it in his mind and legs.

“The time trialling work I have done before starting hill climbs has helped me a lot” says Gunnar “but I am still learning for sure. The one at BEC for example was better for me than Monsal Head. At the BEC, I dared to go for it a bit more than I did at Monsal where maybe I held back a little too much.”

“And BEC was fifteen seconds longer which isn’t a lot but makes a difference to me and the Rake should be longer again than the BEC CC one. (Ed – The record for the Rake is 2minutes 14 seconds where as the winning time at Bec was 1.42 …)

Long before the recce of the Rake though, Gunnar has been training for this type of climb. Because these race efforts are so short, Gunnar explained that he’s had to train specifically for them to develop his anaerobic system a bit more than he would normally during a road racing season.

Gunnar also added that the training has also included trying to gain more strength in his arms and shoulders because riders in hill climbs tend to be out of the saddle a lot. To do this, Gunnar has done that training in the Peak District for the last six or seven weeks on climbs.

“I tend to not use the turbo because you never use your arms or upper body like you would on a climb. Even on a rainy day, I prefer to be on the bike”.

Talking about the effort in a hill climb, someone said to me how they lose all feeling in their arms as they go into oxygen debt and Gunnar says that pretty well describes what happens in a hill climb effort.

“At BEC, my arms and legs were numb for the final 15 seconds and I don’t know if I feel that much pain because you are so focused on getting the effort all out, you don’t feel that much until you finish when it catches up with you and you feel quite sick.”

“On the bike though, you just go all out and after a while go numb for the final bit, the legs turning into jelly and you start to slow down while you’re trying to press on.” And that’s where the pace management notes he’ll be making after assessing the gradient changes on the Rake will be so important so he doesn’t go into the red too early because he knows on the Rake, if you park up on a climb that’s 1 in 5 or 1 in 6, you will park up!

So key to that management of the effort will be gear choice. At Monsal where Gunnar was third, he used three gears and the BEC climb was about the same. On the Rake where the gradient changes are more than the aforementioned climbs, he doesn’t expect it to be more than four gear changes because as he explained, with each change, you lose a fraction of a second.

Gunnar will have a 10 speed block on the back and a single chain ring (42 or 39) and should he use the straight through block he had on for the recce, the ‘jump’ between gears will be kept to a minimum. Talking about his Trigon bike which weighs less than six kilos, (see more here), he says it’s not all about being super light.

Last year and champion after his first season of doing Hill Climbs.

“I want a bike that won’t fail me and I do all my training on this bike as well so I know it won’t break down on me. It’s the same with tyres and I’m going for standard road tyres that have quite a bit of grip. They are a bit heavier but I don’t want a puncture and if it rains, I want some grip so it’s not all about being light.”

Gunnar has chosen integrated bars and stem because he says on a climb like the Rake which is so steep, you need bars that are stiff even if they aren’t the lightest. Gunnar hasn’t gone for a long cranks either and has decided to stick to 170mm ones which he feels happiest with.
So with the recce done, Gunnar now has plenty of time to finish the preparations for the race. Having already ridden the climb over and over and over, he doesn’t expect to have to do that on the day. Instead, there’ll be the breakfast three hours or more before the start in the afternoon and then on arriving, getting his number and pinning that onto his RST skinsuit.

The warm up for the short race is far longer and Gunnar uses the same warm up for a hill climb as he does for a time trial which is between 40 and 50 minutes with some short bursts which will help open the lungs as well as ‘activate’ the legs.

Then, at 2.30pm, the time will arrive for Gunnar to start his effort. By then, his rivals will all have set their time and the only person who can beat Gunnar, will be Gunnar himself. Whatever happens, he will have done everything he can to be in the best shape he can be on the day and that is all any rider can do.

Good luck to Gunnar and all the riders on the ‘Rake’ on Sunday. VeloUK will of course be there…

Jack Pullar live sup to his billing as favourite by winning a wet and cold 2012 Hill Climb Championships on the Rake in Lancashire beating last years champion  Gunnar Gronlund (RST Trigon) and another former champion Matt Clinton.

THE PHOTO ALBUM

The 2012 Hill Climb Championships were held in pouring rain on the Rake (Ramsbottom, Lancs) with Jack Pullar, winner of the big money Hill Climbs in 2012, adding another victory, that of the Men’s Championship, to his unbeaten record.

With the climb lined by a huge crowd, one by one the riders raced up the one in four slopes and even the winner Jack Pullar took ages to recover from the effort of conquering the climb and his rivals. There were so many great rides on the day besides Pullar’s though.

Jack Pullar did not disappoint his team or supporters with victory on the steep slopes of the Rake. The picture tells the story about the crowd… huge!

The podium saw two former champions in second and third, Gunnar Gronlund and Matt Clinton, which shows the strength of the competition for Pullar and only seconds separated them after over two minutes of gut wrenching effort. Outside of the Men’s competition though there was the record breaking ride in appalling conditions by Lynn Hamel and the ninth place by 16 year old James Knox.

The race saw the usual mix of geared bikes and fixed wheels with Matt Clinton saying the headwind did him no favours on fixed while the first two riders, Pullar and Gronlund, both rode single chain rings. Lynn Hamel meanwhile explained that she stuck with double chain ring to play safe and not have the chain come off should she have gone with a single chain ring.

RST Trigon bikes rider Gunnar Gronlund, who was looking for a good performance to try and attract a UCI Continential Team for next year, did just that with second place after a very professional effort.

Plenty of riders were certainly over geared if the zig zagging by some was anything to go but it was interesting listening to Matt Clinton talking afterwards and saying that his geared bike was only a pound heavier and the reason for choosing fixed was simply the better feel.

See the interviews with Matt and those with Jack Pullar, Gunnar Gronlund and Lyne Hamel below:

Jack Pullar: “I am really really happy to have won a national title. I was expected to win but it’s always different at the National Championship as everyone brings their A game. I just went out to do my best. I won on this climb last year so was confident I knew the course and the conditions were similar to last year as well.”

“I went way past what I thought my body could do and then spent twenty minutes afterwards throwing up. I took ages to recover from that because I went so deep. You go a lot further than what you can push your body and you get into so much oxygen debt, you can’t breathe at the end and all you want to do is throw up. It’s a feeling you don’t get in anything else except a hill climb.”

“Any strategy goes out the window when you start racing and the adrenalin takes over and you can’t concentrate on what was planned. I think I went off a bit hard and got to the last 25 meters and thought I had a flat tyre I was going that slow.”

“I ended up in the 25 at the top because of how steep it was and I had nothing else to give. The last 20—25 metres was just horrible. After my wins recently, I knew there was pressure on me to win but when you’re riding, you don’t notice that pressure; it’s just during the build-up.”

Masters A winner Peter Tadros (In Gear Trainsharp) on a fixed gear and good enough for 17th place.

Gunnar Gronlund “I could not have ridden faster today so am happy with the ride. They were not the best of conditions but then I do not mid the rain or cold and was quite happy for it to be grim because it makes the race even harder. The recce I did work perfectly for me. I did a perfect race and got it all out but it wasn’t good enough to win. I take comfort in that I prepared perfectly and the race was good for me too.”

“Jack was stronger than me today and that’s racing. I am happy though to be on the podium”

After the recce on the Tuesday where Gunnar was able to see what gears he was going to need, he chose a 39 front chain ring and a 12-21 block. “In the race though you do ride so much faster especially with the crowd and the adrenalin. I think though I had good gearing for it and certainly nothing to complain about.”

“This sort of climb is a bit too long to go full out from the start so I used the mid section to try and recover, only for three seconds before I went for it again and the final steep part and that seems to be how others rode it. Start quick, try and get some recovery and then attack the last bit”.

“It was fantastic to have such a great crowd especially on a rainy day in late October. It is fantastic and certainly helps. I love riding in front of crowds like this and have their support.”

Gunnar will go back to Sweden during the winter to be with family and friends and then hopefully will be back early next year. “I still haven’t signed for a team yet. The set up I have had with RST this year has been pretty much perfect and I have really enjoyed it and I would love to stay with them for next year as well.”

“The only conflict I have is with myself though. I want to try to progress and do bigger races, race in Europe and that is the only reason I am looking round for a team at the moment.” His current team RST Trigon Bikes, which did a few races in Europe in 2012, are looking at stepping up a level in 2013 and to do that, are also looking at bringing in other sponsors and anyone wanting to get on board with the professionally looking and run outfit can contact Dave Coulson or Chris Walker.

Second in the womens, Joanne Clay Leek Cyclists Club

Matt Clinton: The former champion explained how having been champion before, that gives a rider the confidence to know he can do it again and on the Rake, Matt was only three seconds off silver and just shy of eight seconds off Gold.

“I’ve been up there faster” he said when asked if he was pleased with the result. “That’s the third time I have ridden it on fixed and I have ridden up it twice on gears, the first time in 2005 and fixed is what I know.”

Former champion Matt Clinton, on fixed, and third.

“But, because there was a slight headwind I think it kind of stalled me before I hit the steep section and I did have to push it quite hard and didn’t have quite as much in me at the top. My geared bike is about a pound heavier than the fixed one so it’s not a huge difference but I just like the fact the fixed feels better to climb on in a way.”

“When I did a climb last week, I rode up on the fixed and then rode up on the geared bike and it didn’t feel right. The gradient changes on the Rake normally don’t feel quite severe but I think when you hit the steep section, the headwind made it feel steeper. I did have my geared bike in the car and perhaps I should have ridden it but with it being so steep, you only have to mess up one gear change and it’s over.”

“I’d say this is a tougher climb than Monsal and others. Monsal was a bit short for me and I messed up by trying to go up on the big ring. It is one of my favourite climbs because it’s a tough one. Jacksonbridge and Holme Moss are also really tough climbs which I prefer doing.”

Lynn Hamel “It is a nice feeling to have defended the title successfully. I hit good form in August when I was time trialling and doing some ‘15s’ and stuff and then it carried on from there. I didn’t start the hill training until four weeks before. I have done about twelve climbs during the season and most of them were training climbs and I also did two open hill climbs”.

“Once I got off the line, the first half, right up until the Rake itself, two minutes probably, there was a lot of wheel spin so I didn’t know how I was doing. Then I realised I was going alright because on the Rake, I felt quite quick.”

Lynn like many, had been out to see the climb prior to the race and she explained “ it helps you remember where all the bad surfaces are like the drains, the turns and the wind direction.”

Lynn Hamel in full cry as she won the women’s title and broke her old record for the climb.

Exceptional ride by 16 year old James Knox to finish 9th and first 16 year old and Junior

Ann Bowditch of Guernsey was 3rd in the Women’s

Robert Gough of the Arctic team was 7th.

Leader for a long time and second junior was Ashley Proctor, 20th overall.

The start of the race was in Ramsbottom town centre.

Jack in relaxed mood before the start with one of his supporters in the Quadzilla t-shirts!

Now in it’s fourth year, the Urban Hill Climb returns to North London’s leafy Highgate for possibly the biggest open hill climb event in the UK.

Full Details: www.urbanhillclimb.com | Thursday 11th July |

| Swains Lane, Highgate, London, N6 6QS | 6.30-9.30pm |

A unique atmosphere is generated on the Swains Lane gradient as hundreds of racers, supporters and local residents cheer on all competitors as they make their personal effort on London’s most brutal ascent. Having suffered with poor weather conditions for the first three episodes, according to weather forecasts this year’s event looks like it will be blessed with warm, dry and sunny conditions.

The event attracts an incredible mix of cyclists from many disciplines and a fair spattering of first-time racers and commuters, peppered with a few elite racers. For 2013 previous winners Ben Simmons and Mike Smith return, Lydia Boylan tops the favourites list in the female category and first year veteran Keith Henderson will be hard to beat.

Most categories sell out within minutes, however organisers Rollapaluza have managed to squeeze in a few extra places after the successful introduction of digital timing last year, these have just been released, but are going fast.

Full details and images, results and movies from previous editions are on the event site.

Tejvan Pettinger in great form as he wins the Chesterfield Coureurs ‘Harry Cook Memorial’ Hill Climb on Beeley Moor

RST Cycle Clothing & Trigon Bikes

After 20 years, and 19 editions, the Chesterfield Coureurs ‘Harry Cook Memorial’ Hill Climb finally hit the big time with a record entry of 70 riders. The fact that the Beeley Moor course is within a whisker of being the exact length of The Stang – the venue for next weekends national championship – may have had a part to play in this, however the organisers would like to think that the word is spreading about this friendly event with a generous prize list. Once again prizes totalled in excess of £700 with plenty to battle for in all categories.

Unfortunately the weather did not see fit to play its part in the proceedings and decided to present itself in the form of a stiff cross wind and occasional showers. This presented the organisers with a challenge in terms of erecting the HQ tent and lighting the camping stoves, but once this situation had been addressed the event, went off without a hitch.

The severity of the day was evident, however, once riders began to cross the finish line and it was Chris Baines (Buxton CC/Sett Valley Cycles) who, just like last year, was the first to slip under 10 minutes. Baines is now based in Oxford and he travelled to Derbyshire just for the race – dedication indeed!

Baines was the only rider under the 10 minute mark in the first half of the field and it was finally number 41, Jack O’Neill (Mike Vaughan Cycles), who removed Baines from the top spot with a time of 9 44.7. O’Neill is clearly a young man worth keeping an eye on. Still only a junior; not only was Jack’s time worth an eventual 3rd place overall, but he was only 4 seconds off Ashley Proctors junior record which was set in far more benevolent conditions.

One minute in the start order behind O’Neill, was Simon ‘200 hills’ Warren (Norwood Paragon). Warren has turned veteran this year and he put all of his hill climbing experience to good use with a time of 10 16.0 to secure the fastest veteran category and 9th overall.

With the ‘big hitters’ all in the last 20 riders, it seemed that it would only be a matter of time before O’Neills time would be bettered, but with the wind swinging from a cross to a cross/head direction fast times were to be at a premium. The first to come close was the aforementioned Ashley Proctor (Sheffrec CC) with a time of 9 50.1, and five minutes later Dave Archer (Bolsover and Distict CC) challenged with 9 56.5 having already warmed up by racing up Riber earlier in the day.

All eyes were now down the road looking to see what Tejvan Pettinger (Sri Chinmoy CT) would produce on his Beeley debut and he didn’t disappoint with an astonishing time of 8.34.0. Pettinger was just 11 seconds outside of Gunnar Gronlunds 2011 course record but, like the junior record, Gronlunds time had been set on a good day and clearly it is a mark that Pettinger would trouble with the aid of a helpful tail wind.

With Pettinger raising the winning bar by over a minute, the question was whether last man, Matt Clinton (Mike Vaughan Cycles), would be able to get anywhere near Pettinger’s time. Just over 10 minutes after Pettinger had crossed the line the answer was provided and Clinton came remarkably close with 8 51.8 – the only other time under 9 minutes and almost a minute faster than his young team mate.

Whilst the battle for the men’s award had been going on, the 10 ladies entered had been battling to see if Alex Deck could be challenged for the top honours. Deck has reigned supreme on Beeley for the past 5 years and she is also, unsurprisingly, the holder of the ladies record. With the first few ladies recording times some way off the record of 11 16.3, Deck looked to be set for another victory.

However Lou Collins (Beeston RC), a former GB rower and Iron Man triathlon age group world champion, clearly hadn’t read the script when she come over the line in 11 34.8 – a time that is only bettered by Deck’s record. Twenty five minutes after Collins, Nicola Soden (Champion System – Max Gear RT) dipped under 12 minutes with 11 59.3.

With Soden and Deck only being separated by a matter of seconds in events over the previous weeks, Deck was clearly going to have her work cut out to retain her title, and so it proved when Deck (RST Racing Team) finished a disappointed 3rd with 12 08.9. Deck admitted after the event that she switched off halfway up the climb and that her season had been one weekend too long, but she did confess that even had she been in top form Collin’s time would more than likely have been too much for her in the conditions.

With all of the times in, the only prize to be calculated was that of the winning team and after being demoted by RST Racing Team last year, Buxton Cycling Club assumed their place at the top of the pile for a third time in four years with a near 4 minute winning margin over the second placed team from Sheffield Sports CC.

With the main business of racing out of the way it was time to gather around the tea tent for the prize presentation. Once again the event boosted a generous prize list compiled by co-organiser Guy Cook, and featuring generous donations from local businesses Polaris, JE James Cycles, Décor Improvements, Columbian Caravans and Igloo Cycles.

The £100 on offer for breaking the course record, donated by Martin Smith Opticians of Lincoln, went unclaimed on this occasion – although Martin did admit to having a few nervous moments when news of Pettinger’s ride started to filter through. Despite this close call he has promised that it will again feature in next year’s prize list!

The winner’s trophy was presented by Harry Cook’s son and as the trophy is retained at the club Pettinger was awarded a fine winners medal as a memento of his victory.
Despite the date clash on the calendar with the Matlock events a short distance away, the 2013 promotion was a big success thanks to the many riders that turned up and Chesterfield Coureurs hopes to see them all – plus a few more – on Sunday October 18th 2014 for the 20th running of the event.

Finally the success of the event was assured due to the help and assistance freely given by the many helpers plus event time keepers Phil Minto and John Clarke; something for which the promoters are extremely thankful

Post race interview with Bronze medallist Matt Clinton at the 2013 Hill Climb Championships in North Yorkshire on Sunday

RELATED ARTICLE: Hill Climb Championship 2013

Former Hill Climb champion Matt Clinton is nothing but consistent as he’s been on the podium for the last seven years, the only rider to achieve this as far as we are aware. Riding a bike weighing just over 6 kilos , Matt’s third place on the podium for the third year running )on three very different courses) was he says in his blog, “worth a win on any other climb”.

2013_HC_Champ_Clinton

After a season where it’s been wet (what’s new), Matt’s not won a single hill climb and so the bronze medal was a surprise. “I was surprised, very surprised” he admitted. “Seven years on the trot on the podium but I still don’t know how I pulled that one out of the bag” he said in the pub (the HQ) afterwards.

“I dont think this year I have been able to dig as deep than previous years. I don’t know why that is but today, after the first bit, I glanced down and I thought I am going quite hard here and just ignored what the computer said and kept riding.”

“As I rolled out over the cattle grid and on to the moors, the road ramped up and I got the full force of the wind blowing me sideways across the road – this was where it was really going to hurt after that first three minutes. This was tough going. It was at this point where you really didn’t want to be on the bike!”

Where I saw and photographed the riders, the 18% ramp at the start, the course was sheltered both sides but after that, it was exposed to the elements more than ever. “I almost got blown off the bike twice. It was very gusty out there. I think on one bit, I wheel span as the wind caught me and switched me.”

“I almost got blown off the bike twice. It was very gusty out there. I think on one bit, I wheel span as the wind caught me and switched me.”

There was also a moment for him when halfway up, he didn’t think the big chain ring was working when he tried to change up. Matt rode the race with a 50 tooth chainring which he says, he was going to change at the start. “I just didn’t get a chance to do it but I don’t think I would have gained much having a 52 or 53 on. It just meant I could stay on the big ring a little longer on the kick to the finish before dropping down.”

In a summary of his own race, Matt explained “with the tailwind, it was fast from the start even though you were sheltered so you could use the wind to gain some speed. I could see my minute man who kept disappearing in the dips and then I caught him at the top. I think I spent most of the time out of the saddle. You have the full effect of the wind at your back rather than getting tucked in which I did a bit on the descent.”

Prior to the start, Matt had explained how he’d hit 40 mph on the descent mid climb and when asked was it as fast in the race, he replied “the descent was horrible. I was gripping onto the brakes halfway down and into that wind, I was scared of being blown off the road.”

The conditions were certainly horrible with rain and hail in the face and many of the riders came back down wearing bin liners to keep the cold off their chests. Not Matt who was glad he had leg warmers and jackets at the top to ride down in with the weather so cold and wintery.

The Bronze medal ride was culmination of a weekend for Matt and Becky who had arrived in the area on Friday night after a long drive. “We came up on Friday night and Jack O’Neil and I rode up twice on the Saturday. We stayed four miles down the road and managed to get in around an hour twentyish.

Asked if that preparation helped on the Sunday, Matt replied “the conditions were very similar on Saturday, just not as grim! We were rugged up and did a few efforts but not full on. I know James Gullen (second in the race) did a full on effort on Saturday.”

“I probably went 80% doing around a 10.40 and then eleven and half minutes. I wanted to keep the legs fresh but at the same time work out where I had to dig in. It was very technical. It was probably the most technical hill climb I have ever done, especially with the wind. It would have been very different had it been a head wind.”

Finally, it is all about the bike after all ;-) and when asked about his, Matt said everything was off the peg on the bike. “I put the drop bars back on and didn’t have bar tape. I borrowed a few light bits like I had a Cannondale chainset for the specialised because it’s the lightest power meter you can get but there was no drilling or cutting!”

But then with a bike that light, does anybody need to drill components! Thanks to Matt for the chat. Catch his Blog here

Every year, a name constantly in the results in time trials is Tejvan Pettinger. During this season’s Hill Climbs, he’s broken course records and been on the top step of podiums many times so no surprise he was many a rider’s favourite for the title.

On his blog, he explains “I’d won 11 out of 12 opens (including 6 course records). It’s an impressive track record, but in 2011, I also had similar success in opens, and for whatever reason it didn’t quite happen on the big day. I finished 5th – a few seconds off the medals”.

“This was my 9th national championship, and probably my best shot at the title. Occasionally throughout the year, the thought would pop into my mind ‘if you don’t win it this year, you’ll never win it.’ Probably untrue, but this year was definitely a good opportunity. I’ve done every national championship since 2005 and, the best result was 2010, where I was one second off third place.”

Tejvan says in the genetic lottery, he hit the proverbial hill climb jackpot and has probably got the best possible frame build for long aerobic climbs. Talking after being presented with the jersey, trophy and cap, he told VeloUK ”It’s very nice to win after trying for many years to win the nationals. It was a course that suited me so I’m really happy to get it this year.”

“It was only two seconds but James has lots more years to win it. He’s thirteen years younger than me!”

Tejvan had already presented a great preview of the course on his blog for hill climbs but said that on Sunday it was so much faster than when he had ridden it in practice. “It was such a strong tailwind which did change the climb quite a bit. My strategy was to go as hard as I could up the steep bit and then the wind would blow me a long!”

“It was difficult measuring the effort. I’d done it in practice but the conditions were so different that I just went as hard as I dared without blowing up on the steep section. On the downhill, I just put it into the big ring and kept the speed going”.

Talking about how he chose the components for the bike on such a technical course which was far from just a straight piece of road uphill, Tejvan says “I did try Tri-bars earlier but I thought there is no point with such a strong tailwind. So it was basically an ordinary road bike with 53-39 and I used the big ring quite a lot!”

2011 in Derbyshire and tribars were needed. Not so in 2013!

“With the wind so strong, you were worried about being blown sideways and I was just hanging on and staying in a secure position. When I did the practice, I did try getting into a tuck but the conditions on Sunday were so windy that I felt it was best to hold an ordinary position and concentrate on stable speed.”

Asked what the Hill Climb champs means to riders, he replies “the Hill Climb championships is a fantastic event because it attracts such a range of people. It’s my ninth championship and it is always different with different roads and different riders. It is also very open.”

It was though the year of Yorkshire with the climb in North Yorkshire and Tejvan being from Yorkshire. The champion explained “I could see my minute man Sam Ward ahead in the distance, and flew past him (I think I heard a muffled ‘go on Tejvan’).”

“It was a nice irony to have Sam as my minute man, because he gave me the idea for my first hill climb back in Yorkshire in 1993 (Otley CC) where I finished second to last in that hill climb on East Chevin!”
