from Peter Loader, Mid Devon CC, Event Secretary

NOTE: Send your results as well as club, team & event news here

Dartmoor was the scene for the Mid Devon Cycling Club Hill Climbs, with riders facing the 3.1 mile ascent of Haytor in the morning, followed by the short, sharp 0.9 mile climb of Widecombe in the afternoon. The record for Haytor stands at 12-44, set by Jeff Williams back in 1979 when it was used for the National Championship; whilst the Widecombe record was set by Chris Boardman, also in a National Championship back in the 1990’s.

Riders were greeted by early morning mist on Haytor, and last year’s winner Ben Davis of BH Solidor WAM Youth, returned to defend his title. He was once again victorious recording a winning time of 13-21. He had half a minute in hand over RU Training Today junior Harry Luxton, who recorded 13.52, with Luxton’s team mate Owen Owens in third place with 13.54.

Ayse Vahiboglu of Exeter Wheelers recorded a fine 17.27 to take the ladies’ prize, just missing the ladies’ hill record by 11 seconds.

Davis continued his domination on Widecombe, recording 5-09 for 1st place, with Joe Norledge of Pro Cycling Magazine RT second in 05-24 and junior Jordan Channon of Tavistock Wheelers taking a fine third place with 05-35. Ayse Vahiboglu again took the ladies’ prize with a time of 07-09.

Overall honours went naturally to Davis with a combined time of 18-30, with nearly a minute in hand over Norledge, who beat Owens into third place by 10 seconds. Fourth placed Channon scooped the junior prize, with Vahiboglu the leading lady and the promoting Club’s Oliver Twigger winning the juvenile award. Leading vets were Owen Messenger of Exe Valley (40-49) and Malcolm Chave of Okehampton CC (over 50).

EVENT PRESS RELEASE

2013_Monsal_Album_Pullar

Jack Pullar a big winnner in the event races through the crowd.

The 84th running of this hill climb classic, organised by Marc Etches and Sheffrec CC, has the best ever field of entries including ProConti and Commonwealth Games bronze medalist, Scott Thwaites riding for NetApp Endura. Former National Mens Hill Climb Champion and double defending Monsal Champion, Jack Pullar (Starley Primal Pro Cycling) leads the charge with Jessie Walker (Matrix Vulpine) aiming to retain her Ladies crown.

The mens field is a mix of pro riders and local big guns, all in search of a slice from the £2,000.00 prize fund. Russell Downing, NFTO Pro Cycling is looking to stop Jack Pullar’s winning streak of 3 straight Monsal hill climb wins. Russell has longed to break the 1 minute 14.2 course record set by Malcolm Elliott in 1981 and will again be trying to become the master of Monsal and claim the Dick Aldridge Memorial Trophy.

The NFTO rider came close back in 2003 with a 1:18.3 when he rode for Life Repair. Russ won’t have it all is own way as Pullar has posted times of 1:19.9 and 1:18.9 which has taken him to victory in front of huge crowds for the past 2 years.

Can Pullar do the same this weekend or even beat the 23 year old record? He’ll certainly be up there that’s for sure. Scott Thwaites visits Monsal for the first time this weekend and has already been spotted on Monsal checking out the climb. The European Pro has the talent and explosive power to strike fear into all the pre race favourites making Scott the one who could cause an upset amongst the Monsal regulars.

Graham Briggs (Rapha Condor JLT) is showing excellent form on the cyclo cross scene and is in with a big shout for a place on the podium. Local hill climb specialist Lee Baldwin (Champion System/ClubRoost/Maxgear) is again aiming to break onto the podium along with Commonwealth Games track sprinter Chris Pritchard. Chris is more than capable of putting the pros behind him, but is in the same situation as Thwaites having not ridden on the climb before.

Adam Kenway, Team Zenith – www.buzzcycles.co.uk rides well at Monsal and current Monsal Junior champion James King, Haribo Beacon returns and will be looking to break the 1:25 barrier as a senior and so will Bike Box Allan / Whiston Velo rider, Ashley Proctor.

VETERANS
The vets race is also looking very competitive. Defending Vets Champion is set the miss the event so the Cope Trophy will be up for a new name to be engraved on magnificent piece of silverware. First year vet Lee Brown, Homfirth CC will be aiming to convert his road form into hill climbing form and Richard Middlemiss, Sheffield Sports CC is looking to win the vet prize to give him a quartet of titles at Monsal.

Middlemiss has won at Schoolboy, Junior and Senior level and just needs the Vets title to become the most successful rider at the 84 year old event. The vets category will be a great battle with Simon Warren (Norwood Paragon CC) and local rider Ben Lowe, La Squadra all in the mix for the £100.00 first prize.

With 13 ladies on the start sheet defending champion Jessie Walker wont have an easy ride with Iona Sewell and her gbcycles.co.uk team mate, Nicola Soden well capable of claiming the £100.00 first prize.

The whole field is a great mix of youngsters, ladies and seniors with many local clubs represented. Writer of 100 Greatest Climbs, Simon Warren, Norwood Paragon CC is again at Monsal and knows the climb well having written about the famous climb in his much publicised books. First run in 1930, Monsal Hill Climb has been on the hill climb calendar for an amazing 84 years. This event was first started by a few mates riding out to Monsal Head at the end of the track season and timing each other up the hill, at this time it was an unmade road.

How times have changed. The course is a one-in-six and 675 yards long with fans expected to be lining the route in scenes reminiscent of this year’s Tour de France which visited the region.

This years headline sponsor and confirmed for at least the next 3 years is the Healthcare Management Trust. HMT were founded in 1985 as a registered charity to provide consultancy services to healthcare providers. HMT’s aim has always been to develop and promote the services offered by associated charitable hospitals and care homes so that they can be a viable alternative to the commercial companies both now and into the future. Event organiser, Marc Etches commented “This is a great partnership and the support from HMT has made this prestigious event now very prestigious. We are excited to be able to offer such a great prize list to all the riders and we will now continue to lead the way in setting the standard very high in hill climb promotion nationally”.

2012_MonsalHillClimb_Fonzy_FB

The Healthcare Management Trust Chief Executive, Tony Barrett commented, “It is an honour for HMT Hospitals to be supporting such a historic event, and one that really brings professional cycling close to communities. The Monsall Hill Climb gives local club cyclists the opportunity to compete against world-class athletes and serves to promote cycling in general. Cycling is a sport that aligns with our goal of promoting health and wellbeing to all ages and abilities, and that is epitomised in this event. Each year we see more and more people coming back to compete and spectate, and encouragingly for us we are seeing families riding their bikes to cheer on those racing.”

This year again sees the road closure in place with around 1000 spectators expected to the Peak District beauty spot. Spectators are urged to use the car park provided and arrive early to witness the action unfold. Parking will be signposted and very close to the event HQ.

Event organiser, Marc Etches of Sheffrec Cycling Club would like to thank Tony Barrett at HMT Hospitals, Neil Armitage at Pelican Cycles, Simon at 100 Greatest Climbs, Velotastic, Derbyshire Dales District Council, Litton & Cressbrook Parish Council, Keith Adamson and Little Longstone Village Group, Derbyshire Police and Hobb’s Cafe. Without their help this event just simply wouldn’t happen.

The CC Sudbury Open Hill Climb is taking place three weeks earlier this year on the 19th October on Watson’s Hill, Semer (BHC/1 course) – first rider off at 11:01.

It incorporates the East District Hill Climb Championships – with trophies available for fastest rider & the fastest team of three riders. The prize money has been greatly increased for this year’s event. Men and women have equal prize money and can win the following amounts: £50 (1st ) £40 (2nd), £30 (3rd), £20 (4th) £10 (5th), whilst the fastest male and female juvenile/ junior will be awarded £20. New prizes have also been introduced for this year’s event.

There are Team prizes of £15(1st) £10 ( 2nd) £5 (3rd ) – prizes per rider in a team of three. Plus, new course record prizes courtesy of sponsors, Robins Row Insurance, who are offering £75 to the riders who set the new men’s or women’s course records. These currently stand at 43.4secs by Tom Stephenson (Colchester Rovers C.C.) and 56.6secs by Victoria Pendleton (Mildenhall C.C.) respectively.

On top of these prizes the organizers provide closed & swept roads to compete on. Following the unprecedented success of last year’s event, they have also made available ample additional car parking in the meadow at the foot of Watson’s Hill- just yards from the start. Finally, mention should be made of the atmosphere of this event. Typically, crowds of people gather on the hill to cheer on the riders. This event offers a great opportunity for friends, family and club mates to watch and lend their support.

This video of last year’s event gives a taste of what you can expect: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3rEEYliW0I

Entries close at 18:00 on 7th October and can be made online via the CTT website or by post. (See C.C.Sudbury website for further details http://www.cycleclubsudbury.com/)

This Sunday – Bec CC 59th Hill Climb

Course: GH/31 | 2pm Start

The story so far…
Way back in the midst of time known as the 1950’s the Bec CC was experiencing a period of highs in its history. Membership was flourishing, the social side of the club was buzzing, but it was the exploits of the racing section that was bringing the name of the Bec to the fore….

Bec_CC_HC_History1

Success was coming from all directions of the sport, including long distance events, time trialling, track and particularly in bicycle polo! In a more specialized side of cycle racing, one Bec member in particular, Jim Pentecost, was showing exceptional talents for the discipline of hill climbing. Unfortunately for a South London Club, most of the Hill Climb events of that period seemed to be very North of the Thames, and Jim, with the support of his club mates had to tour the country in
search of competition.

With this in mind, and in keeping with Bec tradition of trying to support our sport by organizing several open events at various disciplines it was decided to add an
Open Hill Climb to the Bec calendar. The task of finding a suitable course fell to climbing expert Jim and his wife Eileen, and Ron and Hazel Beckett who duly spent the spring of 1955 scouring the south for a suitable bump in the road.

With Titsey discovered, Ron then took on the task of organizer of the event for the next 30 years (1956 – 86), before ‘donating’ the organizers reigns to his eldest son Garry.

To add to the grandeur of the original event Ron and Hazel donated a trophy which they had recently discovered in the attic of a flat they were renting in Highbury, and which had previously been awarded as 1st prize at a gardening show! Ron also gifted a further trophy in later years, which had previously been awarded in an ex-pats tennis tournament in Egypt, in the 1930’s and it has since been used as the team award trophy.

2013_DavidMillar_01

David Millar, last race is the BEC CC hill climb

Jim Pentecost at that time was taking many hill climbing scalps, and was the winner of the first two editions of the Bec event with some classy riding which was reported by the media and spectators of the time as “looking effortless and graceful” (I’m sure Jim would argue that point!!).

Over the years there have been many memorable occasions in the running of this event. Great individual rides by some very gifted athletes. Riders such as Gary Dodd with his 6 wins during a 16 year period. Great team wins from clubs such as the Kingston Phoenix, R.C. and Nomads Hitchin C.C. who jointly hold the record of 7 wins, and ‘Great Storms’, such as the one 2 days before the 1987 event, which rendered the hill impassable with fallen trees.

Other ‘great’ names to have graced the start sheet are numerous, but probably none more so than Tour De France winner and multiple Olympic gold medalist Bradley Wiggins, who participated in the 2005 50th edition as a tribute to his “old friend” and founder of the event Ron Beckett who had passed away in the Easter of that year.

In 2007, a record number of entries faced the timekeepers and enthusiastic crowd, and Dan Fleeman of Blue Sky Cycles R.T., a ‘Hill Climb Virgin’ emerged to grab the winners crown in 1.43.02, and with it topple Gary Dodd’s 12 year old hill record.

2006 was an eventful year, rain of biblical proportions and the winners Position being shared… Gary Dodd, after several years ‘retirement’ came back to try and regain his King of the Hill Title, and he would have been successful were it not for the in-form Bill Bell of the Gemini CC equally his time, resulting in a dead heat.

2013_Monsal_Album_Pullar

Jack Pullar winning Monsall in 2013 and a favourite for the BEC CC in 2014.

Despite being more like a swimming gala than a bike race, it didn’t deter more than ever Competitors from facing the Timekeeper in 2008, and every year since then the field has continued to grow, records broken, and faster times become the norm…A great tussle between past winner Jody Crawford (Arctic Premier R.T.) and Daniel Lloyd (A.N.Post – Sean Kelly R.T) saw them as the only riders to manage sub ‘1.50’, on a challenging and windy day with Lloyd claiming the top spot by just over 1 second in 1.46.44.

2009 and the postal service strikes created a challenging time for the organiser but another healthy field of 87 entrants still made it onto the start sheet. Again the weather played its part in trying to upset the event with a downpour causing slippery conditions for the later starters. Fortunately for Michael Smith, Team Milton Keynes, he started early at number 17 & benefitted from the drier conditions which allowed him to take the honours with a very credible 1.46.08.

2010 saw the Arrival of a new claimant to the ‘King of the Hill’ title but at just 15 years Old and with a winning time of 1.45.3 ‘Prince of the Hill, seemed more apt, even if he did beat some of the UK’s top Professional riders from the likes of the Rapha Condor & Raleigh Squads. Coming back to defend his title in 2011 Germain again beat a quality field knocking time of his own PB to end up with 1.45.1

Since 2012, Germain has been unable to defend his Title, as he has been called up for GB Olympic Development Squad duties… But has vowed to come back in the future & put the Record well and truly on the shelf.

So 2012 saw a new champion, and a new record. Jack Pullar set the bar very high riding a 1.42.9 and again in 2013 took the Top step… Back again in 2014, he looks set to make it a triple, but he’s up against a class field, and is hoping that retiring Pro David Millar of Garmin–Sharp riding his very last race of an 18 year Career doesn’t steal his mantle and also set a New Record for this the 59th Editon of the Bec CC Hill Climb

THE COURSE: GH-31•

‘Titsey’ ( White Lane) is situated on the left of the B2024 when approaching from Westerham, or the Right if coming from Croydon/ London direction, and is opposite the sign posted Tatsfield.

• The course is 700 yards long, and starts 40yards from the Junction with the B269 & Finishes 70yards from the junction with the B2024.

It is mainly a 1-in- 6 gradient, increasing to a nice little 1-in-4 section 50-60 yards from the finish line. It levels off slightly approx 15 yards from the line.

According to ‘past survivors’ over the years, a gear ratio of between 54 and 59 inches affords the most comfortable of ascents, and treaded tyres are advisable should the weather be a little on the damp side!

Once again we have been granted the luxury of an Official road closure to assist with our safety & enjoyment.. We gratefully thank Officials at Tandridge District Council for allowing this.

We would spectators and riders alike to still exercise caution and treat the hill and surrounding countryside with due respect, leave no litter and help safeguard future editions of the Bec CC Hill Climb.
